An ivory bouclé barrel accent chair with wooden legs

Bouclé — Bouclé & Teddy Fleece

A pair, because one accent chair always looks like it lost the other

Buying accent chairs in pairs is the cheapest way to make a room look designed. Symmetry does the work that would otherwise take careful arrangement, and a pair flanking anything reads as deliberate.

  • Sold as a pair, which is how accent chairs actually work in a room.
  • Compact at 54.6 x 53.3cm each, with a curved barrel back.
  • Ivory bouclé teddy fleece over high-density foam, on wooden legs.

A single accent chair is a difficult object. It has to be placed carefully, balanced against something else, and given a reason to be where it is — otherwise it reads as a chair that ended up in a corner. A pair does none of that work. Two identical chairs either side of a console, a fireplace or a window are automatically a composition.

These are also genuinely compact — just over half a metre square each — which is what makes a pair viable in a normal room. Two full-size armchairs need two metres of wall; two of these need 110cm. The curved barrel back is the comfort detail: it wraps around rather than stopping flat, so the chair supports your upper body from the sides as well as behind.

Questions about this piece

Bouclé Barrel Chairs x2 FAQs

01

Are both chairs included?

+

Yes, this is a set of two.

02

What is bouclé?

+

A fabric woven from looped yarn, giving a nubbly, textured surface. Teddy fleece bouclé is the softer, denser version of it.

03

Are they full-size armchairs?

+

No — they are compact accent chairs at 54.6 x 53.3cm and 44.5cm high. Comfortable for sitting, not for lounging.

04

Where do they work best?

+

Either side of a console or fireplace, at a dressing table, in a bedroom, or as extra seating that lives against a wall until needed.

05

How do I clean bouclé?

+

Vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Blot spills immediately and never rub — the looped yarn can pill if abraded.

Why furniture in pairs makes a room look finished

Symmetry does the work for you

The eye reads symmetrical arrangements as intentional. Two identical chairs, two matching lamps, two side tables — none of them require any skill to arrange, and all of them make a room look considered. It is the single easiest decorating technique there is.

Where pairs go

Flanking something: a fireplace, a console, a window, a bed, a doorway. Facing something: two chairs opposite a sofa, which creates conversation where a single chair creates an odd number. At either end: two side tables at the ends of a sofa, two lamps on a sideboard.

Odd numbers are for objects, even numbers for furniture

Decorative objects on a shelf look best in threes and fives. Furniture looks best in pairs. The two rules seem to contradict each other and do not — one is about composition on a surface, the other about balance in a room.

The exception

A deliberately asymmetric room, where one large piece is balanced against several smaller ones. It works beautifully and it takes considerably more judgement. If you are unsure, buy the pair.

And buy them together

Two chairs bought a year apart from different batches will differ in colour, however identical the product code. Fabric dye lots vary. Buying a pair at once avoids a mismatch that becomes more obvious the longer you look at it.

Two chairs, one decision

A matched pair of compact bouclé barrel chairs — symmetry without the arranging.
