Bouclé is the curly, looped fabric that makes a chair feel like a hug: soft to the touch, forgiving in a busy room, and quietly smart. Here is what sits behind the softness.
In detail
What makes Bouclé special
What it is made of
Bouclé is a looped-yarn fabric, woven or knitted so that tiny curls cover the surface. Teddy fleece is a close cousin: a thicker, softer pile with the same cosy look. Both are upholstered over a timber or metal frame with high-density foam.
Its strengths
The looped surface hides marks and creases better than a smooth fabric, and it looks soft in any light. It is warm to sit on and pairs well with timber and metal.
How it lives and ages
Light-coloured bouclé stays fresh with regular brushing. Snagged loops should be gently pushed back through rather than cut. Keep it out of strong sun to stop the colour yellowing.
Caring for it
Vacuum with a soft brush attachment and blot spills with a clean cloth. Do not rub, which can flatten the loops, and use a fabric cleaner made for upholstery if needed.
